After a 3-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I’m back in San Cristóbal visiting 5 Loewenstern fellows who are spending this summer working with Cántaro: Hafsa Ahsan, Melissa Cantú, Jayaker Kolli, Ana Saucedo, and Yifei Zhang. It’s exciting to be back!

Taking off from Mexico City airport!
This morning, I visited the Museo de los Altos de Chiapas and the Centro de Textiles del Mundo Maya at the Ex-Convento de Santo Domingo. A big portion of the museum is being renovated, but I was able to visit the Textile Center where I learned about the different weaving techniques used in the Mayan regions of Chiapas and Guatemala and admired their beautiful collection of huipiles, enredos, tilmas, and other traditional garments–you can see them too in their website!

Later, I met with the five Loewenstern fellows for coffee and to plan for the first day at Cántaro Azul tomorrow. I realize now that I did not take any pictures–I will never learn! But I heard they have taken quite a few already and I hope to see a lot of those photos here! It was great to hear some of their stories, and their enthusiasm is contagious!
