Un Verano en San Cris: Week Six

This week we took advantage of the nice weather and went out to Zona Arqueologica Toniná and Arcotete Parque Ecoturistico. According to our tour guide, 30% of Toniná has been unearthed, so we got to see a lot more structures than in Palenque. We were also the first group to visit one of the temples which has just now been opened to the public! One highlight for me was walking through the bedroom and restroom ruins. It’s amazing to be able to see what was once someone’s home and get a glimpse of their lifestyle.

During our trip to Arcotete, we took a tour of the grutas and went ziplining! The park also offers boat rides, bungee jumping, rock climbing, and other activities. One highlight for me was a sign at the park that said “Nature plays music for those willing to listen.”

Additionally, a few of us got on the “Recorrido de Leyendas” trolley tour. It was interesting to learn about the history of some buildings in San Cristóbal. It seems like a few of the buildings have been repurposed in recent years.

Lastly, we ate at restaurant Las Pichanchas and were pleasantly surprised by the live performances of the regional dances. The dancers wore their traditional garments and explained some aspects of Chiapas culture.
