Geomexico Day 5 (El Encuentro Team)

Day 5 was off to a great start with some french toast made by our hostel host, Ale (Have we stressed how amazing she is?). Our bus was running a little behind, so we ended up at the office a little later than normal and immediately headed out to show the Engi 120 team around El Encuentro. The road was a bit rough as we were all squeezed into one truck, but at least this time we all put on sunscreen before we headed out, so we did not get nearly as sunburnt as previous days.

When we first arrived at El Encuentro, we recorded videos recounting our experience working with Cantaro for the week for them to use in future videos. It was fun getting to talk about what a wonderful experience we have all had this week!

After we finished recording the videos, Pablo, one of the Cantaro employees we have been working with this week, showed the Engi 120 team around El Encuentro and told them about the different ideas they had for the area. The Engi 120 team seemed to really like everything and they were very interested in the different buidling techniques and the green roof.

Our team also needed a few extra measurements, so we got those all measured while we were out at El Encuentro. One of the measurements that we needed to get was the height from the sink outflow pipe to the height of the ground where we are planning on putting the wetland. This measurement helps us plan the height of the water in the wetland system  and how high to place the inflow and outflow pipes, so that our fluid dynamics work correctly; However, this height is hard to measure because the site of the wetland is a few feet from the outflow pipe, so we had to get creative with our measuring. We took a tube with water in it and put one end at the pipe opening and the other above where we wanted the wetland. Since the water levels at either end of the tube are the same when the tube is open to air, we could measure the height difference between the ground and the outflow pipe. It was cool to see engineering at work and see a innovative way of taking measurements.

Our unique way of measuring the height difference

After we headed back from El Encuentro, we spent the rest of the day finishing up our report and presentation. We got to talk with Simon, another cantaro employee, about his recommendations for our report. Our discussion was super helpful and we made some good changes to our design from his tips.

Talking with Simon about our design and report

We headed back to the hostel after the office closed to finish up some work and grab some dinner. Tonight we headed out to get some Huaraches with Dr. Loyo. According to Talia, these Huaraches looked different than the ones she has had before, but they were still really good!

Out to dinner with our lovely group and Dr. Loyo!

As I am typing this blog post, my other team members are finishing the translation of our report and presentation from English to Spanish and then we will all be heading to bed! We are excited to present our design tomorrow to some members of Cantaro and see what they all think!
